What is a Whole Food?

A whole food is one that is minimally refined or processed. At Mary’s Gone Crackers we use whole foods because they are an important part of how Mother Nature gives us healthful vitamins, minerals and fiber.

The food industry uses refined ingredients in most processed food to make products easier to produce and handle, to extend shelf life and to ensure a more uniform product.

Yet the refining process removes many nutrients. Take grains for example. Brown rice is a whole grain. When whole, the three parts of the grain— the endosperm, the germ and the bran— are left intact. When refined to make white rice, the germ and the bran are removed, eliminating important sources of fiber and nutrition.

The food industry tries to create the illusion of healthy products by first refining ingredients and then adding vitamins and minerals back in the form of extracts. This is called “enriching” or "fortifying" the product.

Mary’s Gone Crackers knows an extract is not the same as the whole food. Mother Nature already provides us with truly nutritious options.
